Love and Marriage in Renaissance Florence

This exhibition explores one of the most important art forms of Renaissance Florence: pairs of great chests, lavishly decorated with precious metals and elaborate paintings. These items – now generally called cassoni – were often the most expensive of a whole suite of decorative objects commissioned to celebrate marriage alliances between powerful families.

Macclesfield Psalter

'I Turned it into a Palace': Sir Sydney Cockerell and The Fitzwilliam Museum

This exhibition will celebrate one of the most enriching periods in the history of the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Directorship of Sir Sydney Cockerell (1908-37). To mark the centenary of the foundation of the Friends in 1909, the exhibition will conclude with a recent acquisition which attracted their most generous contribution ever and the largest public support in the history of the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Macclesfield Psalter. The public campaign was launched by The Art Fund and generously donated to by Art Fund members.

Turner in January 2009: The Vaughan Bequest

These works, bequeathed by Henry Vaughan, span Turner's long career, from his early topographical wash drawings to the atmospheric sketches of continental Europe from the 1830s and '40s. Vaughan stipulated in his bequest that these delicate watercolours should only be shown in January when natural daylight is at its weakest, so they will not fade.

Robert Bevan and the Cumberland Market Group

Robert Bevan was one of 16 founder members of the Camden Town Group, the most important British Post-Impressionist movement. It held its inaugural exhibition in 1911, but by the start of the First World War it had disbanded. Southampton holds one of the finest collections of Camden Town Group work outside the Tate in the world.
