Following the success of the inaugural Art Fund Collect launched by The Art Fund and Crafts Council in 2008, The Art Fund has allocated up to £75,000 towards Art Fund Collect 2009. The scheme is designed to challenge curators to acquire ambitious and significant works of contemporary applied and decorative art by leading UK-based and international artists and makers at Collect 2009, which will be held at the newly opened Saatchi Gallery.

Collect, organised by the Crafts Council, is Europe’s only annual art fair dedicated to international contemporary craft and will be held at the Saatchi Gallery from 14 – 17 May 2009 (14 May by invitation only).
By providing special access to the fair for selected curators, 100% grants for outstanding examples of contemporary applied and decorative art, and a quick and straightforward decision-making process, the scheme is designed to enable museum collections to compete with private collectors and raise the profile of contemporary craft collections in the UK.

Between 10 and 15 curators will be shortlisted and have the opportunity to select a single work for their museum’s collections on the morning of Thursday 14 May 2009, at a special pre-VIP preview of the fair which the Crafts Council are organising especially for the initiative. The shortlist will then be considered by a committee, who will allocate up to £75,000, with their decisions based on the curators’ initial proposals and the ambition of their subsequent choice at Collect.
